Critical Response

June 6, 2019

AMR first responders share their experiences from the October 1 Las Vegas mass shooting.

The night of October 1, 2017 in Las Vegas was one that American Medical Response first responders will not forget anytime soon.

Chris Cutting, a dispatcher, recalls working hard despite having "no way to tell whether the scene was safe." Sara Philbin, an emergency medical technician, remembers that she and her partner had to "try to be careful" because there was still an active shooter when she arrived at the scene. Michael Whitehead Jr., a paramedic and instructor, describes how his colleagues were "the most amazing people," since they were the ones who were driving towards the chaos while everyone else was trying to get away. Brett Dragun, a supervisor, took over a coordination role and called units from all over, being sure to tell everyone that "they were going to be there all night."

Each of them, and many more, worked tirelessly to save as many lives as they could.
